What is Christian Democracy?
Political Democracy and
Economic Democracy on Christian Principles in a Pluralistic World
You can call it conservative populism, or just Christian Democracy; but you cannot call this communitarian movement exclusive or parochial. There is absolutely no confessional requirement. You do not have to be a Christian to join our cause (and joining our cause does not make you a Christian). You just have to be committed to the success of your local community, the American commonwealth, and all people everywhere.
PLURALISTIC WORLD -- We believe profoundly in the separation of the institutions of religion and government. There must be room for every humane belief system.
CHRISTIAN PRINCIPLES -- While the CDU is not a religious organization; it is built upon Christian principles that inform everything we do -- not narrow or foreign principles, but timeless principles like:
Human Dignity -- pro-life; civil rights; work ownership
Freedom -- school choice; rehabilitation; localism
Solidarity -- universal healthcare; fair trade; cooperation
Stewardship -- green economy; traditional marriage;
sunshine laws for government and public corporations
ECONOMIC DEMOCRACY -- Economic democracy can mean any number of things, but at base it means the rule of the people in the economy. It means that our economy should be of the people, by the people, and for the people; not just the few. This does not mean that the state should own everything ... far from it, but it does mean that the people’s government has the right and the duty to bring good order to the economy, and insure that the interests of the people are respected.
POLITICAL DEMOCRACY -- While our political system is not built to give a platform to, or even allow, a multitude of voices (just two voices, Republican conventional wisdom and Democratic conventional wisdom); nevertheless, there are some things that can be done within the system that would bring positive change. The first of these is liberalizing ballot-access laws. Secondly, we need voting-method reform. The method that is showing most promise right now is instant-runoff voting (IRV), which would replace the current plurality (lesser-of-two-evils) voting-method.
